Indonesia – Forestation in Sumba and West-Papua

Trees planted

This project aims to restore degraded grasslands in Indonesia, particularly on the islands of Sumba and in West Papua, by transforming them into tropical forests. Invasive grasses have taken over these areas, preventing trees from growing naturally and increasing the risk of fires during the dry season. The project addresses this by planting trees that help suppress the grasses and allow forests to regenerate.

An important aspect of the project is its focus on local communities. Trees for All collaborates with local organisations and Indigenous communities, who help decide which species to plant and how to manage the land.

In addition to these social and economic benefits, the project contributes to biodiversity conservation by restoring habitats for wildlife, including endangered bird species. The developing forests can also absorb carbon dioxide, improve soil quality and reduce fire risks.
