Alberta – Reforestation

Alberta’s boreal forests stretch across 60% of the province and provide critical habitat for over 200 bird species. These forests support rich biodiversity and help protect the environment.

In 2019, a wildfire burned large areas of crown land, including previously logged sites that aren’t currently required to be replanted. Without help, these areas would regenerate slowly and unevenly, leading to lower biodiversity.

Together with Ecodrive, Shaki Reforestation Ltd and Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries, a restoration strategy is set up and exists (among others) out of the following points:

  • Planting native White and Blue Spruce, hardy conifer species well-suited to the region

  • Using sensors to track wildlife activity, forest health, and fire risk

  • Piloting scalable restoration methods on public land
