Kibale National Park is one of the most beautiful rain forests in East-Africa. It is home to 375 species of brightly colored birds and 70 species of mammals, including the endangered chimpanzee. Trees here can grow into forest giants up to 50 meters tall. However, this green oasis has been damaged by deforestation over the past decades. Where the forest disappeared, elephant grass has taken over, and this grass chokes out all natural regrowth.

By removing the elephant grass and planting native tree seedlings, the forest can grow back. This is hard work carried out by families from the villages surrounding the park. More than 200 villagers are involved in planting and managing the trees, which provides them with additional income. They also maintain the nurseries that supply seedlings to the project and receive training to develop sustainable activities such as beekeeping and fruit growing.
