Ghana – Bongo District

Bongo district is one of the driest areas in northern Ghana, where most residents rely on farming and livestock for their livelihoods. The region is also home to the Vea Dam, a vital water source that supplies thousands of people with drinking water and irrigation for crops.

Over time, the riparian forests that once bordered the dam have mostly vanished. This loss, together with the effects of climate change, has led to soil erosion: fertile land is being washed away and polluted, and sediment is gradually filling in the lake around the Vea Dam. Crop failures caused by extended droughts or intense flooding have worsened poverty and food insecurity in the area.
