Protecting the Peruvian Amazon and Its Wildlife

The Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (ARC), together with its Peruvian sister organization, ARC Northern Peru (ARCNP), is dedicated to protecting and restoring threatened rainforest ecosystems in the Peruvian Amazon. The organizations are developing a vital wildlife corridor in the San Martín region, securing critical habitat for endangered species such as jaguars, Andean bears and lowland tapirs.

Through strategic land acquisition, reforestation and forest monitoring, they are working to reconnect fragmented habitats and protect biodiversity for future generations. Their efforts also include restoring degraded pastures with native trees and maintaining a permanent, solar-powered Ranger and Research Station to support forest protection and scientific research.

Local communities are central to this work. ARCNP employs local Forest Guardians, collaborates with residents on conservation activities and promotes women’s participation in land acquisition decisions. A partnership with the regional environmental authority has further expanded the organization’s responsibility for protecting and monitoring the surrounding rainforest.

By combining habitat restoration, community collaboration and long-term conservation, ARC and ARCNP are working to secure a connected, thriving rainforest where wildlife and local communities can flourish.
