The Netherlands – The Dunes in Oostvoorne

On the South-Holland coast near Rockanje, there is a distinctive natural area: the Oostvoorne dunes. This landscape is a patchwork of dune valleys, expansive dune lakes, ponds, marshland, and forest.

In the middle of these dunes lies the historic Stelling Biberbunker, a World War II site made up of 97 bunkers. It is the only bunker of its type in the Netherlands that can still be visited today.

Because the surroundings of the bunker are ecologically sensitive, protecting the area is essential. For that reason, in cooperation with Zuid-Hollands Landschap and Trees for All, we are creating a belt of shrubs around the Biberbunker.

This green barrier will not only offer peace and quiet but will also supply food, nesting spots, and shelter for wildlife and vegetation. It will form a valuable habitat for rare species such as the northern vole, green-knol orchid, horned grebe, little egret, and spoonbill.
