Trees planted

In partnership with TreeProject, trees are planted in several locations across Victoria. All trees and shrubs are indigenous to the area in which they are planted, which will create healthy, diverse and resilient ecosystems.

The seedlings are grown from seed by experienced volunteers at their homes, creating a unique community network of volunteer growers across Victoria. Once the seedlings are ready to be planted, landholders collect them and community groups and volunteer planters come together to plant the trees, mainly on private landholder and farm properties. This community-based approach connects urban and rural communities through the shared goal of restoring native vegetation and improving the health of the landscape.

To give the seedlings the best chance of survival, trees are planted at the right time of year (May–September), when conditions are most favourable for establishment. Volunteer planters carefully plant each seedling and protect it with a tree guard, creating a small microclimate that helps shield young plants from harsh weather, browsing and competition while they establish.

TreeProject assesses each request for trees to ensure that plantings are appropriate for the site, that landholders are committed to maintaining the growing trees, and that the trees will be protected from future clearing.

TreeProject’s seedlings are planted to create and restore native wildlife habitat, for example by establishing wildlife corridors that reconnect fragmented areas of native vegetation and provide habitat and food sources for many native species, including koalas, kangaroos, possums and native birds. Over time, individual plantings can become part of larger networks of vegetation, helping native wildlife move through and use the landscape. These plantings also provide important benefits for landholders and the wider landscape by helping prevent erosion, protect waterways and dams, improve soil health, provide shelter for livestock, and increase biodiversity, contributing to more sustainable and resilient farming practices.

Importantly, every tree represents more than just a tree planted in the ground. Behind each seedling is a volunteer who has grown it from seed, a landholder who has committed to caring for it, and a community of people who have helped bring the planting to life. Together, these efforts create long-term environmental benefits while connecting people with the restoration and care of Victoria’s native landscapes.

TreeProject’s planting sites span across a wide range of landscapes throughout Victoria, from the forests and mountain ranges of the Yarra Ranges and the Great Dividing Range, to Gippsland, the Central Victorian Goldfields, the coastlines and the Mallee region.

With your help, we are restoring native ecosystems, increasing biodiversity, providing important habitat and resources for native animals, improving landscapes and waterways, and creating lasting benefits for future generations.
