Scotland – Restoring landscapes

1
Trees planted

In Eastern Scotland lies a beautiful valley called: Glen Prosen. A lot of the nature has disappeared throughout the years. Natural regeneration is also very limited due to grazing by dear. Therefore, the landscape cannot withstand the effects of climate change.

Following the rivers in the valley, the effects are clearly visible. Due to a lack of trees and shade, the water temperature is rising, resulting in a bad environment for species to live in such as the Atlantic salmon.

The trees that will be planted in this region will help create a more fertile soil that absorb water and nutrients. Next to that, trees leave fruit and seeds that end up in the river, leaving food for funghi, bacteria, fish and birds. Like mentioned before, trees also provide shade, keeping the water cooler and more liveable for animal species. Lastly, risk of flooding is reduced as tree roots prevent erosion.

The species that will be planted here are: alder, silver birhc, various willow species, rowan, aspen, hazel and wild cherry. Fencing will be placed aournd the trees to protect the young trees from grazing.
