This project takes place in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in the Gulf of Mexico. This is where beautiful mangrove forests originate. These forests form an important connection between the land and the sea. Unfortunately, more and more mangrove is disappearing due to logging and forest fires. This has disastrous consequences for the ecosystem and for the plants and animals in the biosphere reserve. Many species, such as fish and crustaceans, have disappeared or gone backwards. This in turn creates problems for the local population who live from fishing. Moreover, the area has become vulnerable to natural disasters. Tropical storms and cyclones spring to mind.
Together with SENDAS and the local population, Trees for All is planting 100,000 new trees. These are three local mangrove species: the white, red and black mangrove. These species have a lot of advantages. They store a lot of carbon in the biomass and in the soil. They also protect the environment against flooding, drought and tropical storms.
In addition, they are restoring the water network in the area. They dig channels that are connected to the sea. This will allow the tides to flow in, so that the mangrove forest can develop again. Original plants and animals, such as endangered turtles and iguanas, will then return to the area. This is how we bring nature back to life!
