Eye Hotel is located in a beautiful 17th century building which was home to an eye hospital from 1858 until 1984. The eye hospital was founded by the famous professor, Franciscus Cornelis Donders. He was director until 1883 as well as an ophthalmologist until 1862, a true superstar and pioneer in ophthalmology. When this legend passed away in 1889 his partner, Herman Snellen stepped in. Donders might be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten. In 1921 a statue of the superstar himself was placed on Janskerkhof and a street in Utrecht was named after him. In 1895 the eye hospital moved to a new and larger building.
